"Give everybody many loving wishes from me. Above all, may they all be very fervent in this holy time of Lent… "St. Julie, Namur, March 15, 1813.
Prayer "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Jn 8:11
Gracious God,
I thank you for the light in my life I receive from the sun, electricity, and the gift of Your presence. Guide me that I may see how to share this great gift with others. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Pray for those who do not have electricity or access to clean drinking water.
Fasting How can you fast from wasting electricity and water? Fast by: † turning out the lights and unplugging chargers when they are not being used. † turning the water off until you're ready to rinse your toothbrush and mouth.
† watering a plant with water you normally pour down the drain. † turning on the washing machine and dishwasher only when you have full loads to wash.
Give Alms Use the money saved through your fast to help provide electricity and clean water in the Congo:
Help us change lives: provide electricity and clean water in Congo and Nigeria
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur work daily with entire families in schools and hospitals in six countries in Africa. In some countries, electricity is a scarce commodity and clean water is non-existent. People can live without electricity, but life without clean water is impossible.
Thanks to you and your generosity the Sisters have built three photovoltaic units that harness the power of the Sun with solar energy panels and store the energy in batteries. These energy projects provide continuous, reliable electrical power and clean water 24 hours a day to the communities they serve.
Electricity enables doctors and nurses to operate at night, to sterilize equipment and to store medicine with 24 hour access to refrigeration. Teachers and school leaders have links to new resources through the internet. With electrical light in their dormitories, students can read after 6 p.m. Computer access is bringing adult education to the wider community.
The Power of the Sun project is already changing lives in Fugar, Ngidinga and Awkanawaw. You can make a difference in Kitenda, Lemfu and Pelende by helping us build three more photovoltaic units.
