Racism
Over the past thirty years Sisters of Notre Dame have articulated in our major documents an indisputable desire to address the issue of racism. A few examples include:
Chapter Acts ' 69:..."We, Sisters of Notre Dame, will strive to find concrete means to promote social and racial integration."
Chapter Acts ' 75: "Discrimination on the basis of race...is present among us, and in the systems and structures of our society. Individually and corporately we must strive to eliminate the cause of this evil".
Constitutions (1989):
"We therefore strive to awaken in ourselves and in those with whom we work, a conscience which recognizes sin in its individual and social manifestations. We commit ourselves to that action for justice which makes real and credible the message of the gospel." (Article 22)
"We work with others to transform unjust structures and systems as we participate in creating new ways of relating which enable all to express more fully the goodness of God." (Article 23)
Chapter Acts '96: We commit ourselves...to be in communion with each other as sisters who embrace the diversity of...race..." and "We call each community to discover and eliminate its own ways of acting that are racist, exclusive, or violent..."
