Sister Dorothy Stang’s Legacy: 20th Anniversary of Martyrdom

On the 20th anniversary of Sister Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN’s martyrdom, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur join schools and communities worldwide to honor her enduring legacy. In recognition of her profound impact, the cities of Reading and Dayton, Ohio, have proclaimed February 12, 2025, as Sister Dorothy Stang Day.

In a profound testament to Sister Dorothy’s witness, the Sanctuary of New Martyrs at the Basilica of San Bartolomeo in Rome welcomed two sacred relics on January 10, 2025. The Basilica now houses soil from the place of Sister Dorothy’s martyrdom in a special reliquary on the side altar. Alongside this rests a sweater worn by Sister Dorothy and later carried forward by another Sister through all twelve trials following Sister Dorothy’s death.

Communities across Springfield, Dayton, and Cincinnati have come together in remembrance through service projects, Masses of remembrance, and special events, sharing their tributes through the Ohio Province website.
