Many times we say that simple people, the humble or those with few resources are more generous than the powerful or the wealthy. This surprises us and we say that it is illogical, that it does not make sense, it’s incoherent. But for the Master, it does make sense, the reason being that those who are simple place their lives in the hands of God who provides all they need. Because of this the poor woman, who is also a widow, is ready to share a little wealth, the two small coins, an act of generosity.
Jesus does not let pass this opportunity to teach his disciples not to be distracted by appearances and falseness of the rich; he helped them see beyond this. The woman’s action teaches them the generosity and closeness of the widow, rather than rich man, with the Good God
For my part this helps me to continue recognizing Jesus’ keen capacity for observation, both social and spiritual. Jesus knows how to recognize the difference between the action of the rich man and that of the poor person who gives all and not just what is over. Without doubt Jesus’ sensitivity towards the person is the air which he was accustomed to breathe.
The other thing which it teaches me is that in this world in which women have been so ill-treated – we are invited to continue struggling as did St. Julie – to go ahead confiding always in the generosity of the Good God. The woman loved the Good God with all her heart, and soul, with all her strength and with all her mind. Because of this she gave ALL. What other explanation can there be for her generous offering?
