A promise of personnel was given and three sisters of Notre Dame arrived. They soon took over the management of St. Angela’s Girls School in Uzairue and built Notre Dame Hospital in Edo State with money begged from their families and friends.

In 1981, in response to the request of the Nigerian Conference of Women Religious, (NCWR) Sisters of Notre Dame took up the responsibility of the newly launched National Renewal Centre at Iva Valley, Enugu State.

Also, in 1981 we started accepting Nigerian women at the request of the priests/people, who wanted the indigenous girls to be trained as sisters in order to continue the good works our sisters were doing. Sr. Virginia Egwuchukwu became the first professed Nigeria sister of Notre Dame de Namur in 1984. The Novitiate House was completed in 1985 in Ilorin diocese, Kwara State and the Postulate was established in Auchi Diocese, Edo State.

A big step for us was the commissioning of our new Provincial Headquarters in Kuje, Abuja in 2009 where a girl’s secondary boarding school was opened in 2017. Currently the Province has 123 professed sisters 15 young women in formation.

Our Congregation has developed an ambitious project for solar energy stations to bring clean water and electricity to the sisters. Photovoltaic projects have been installed in almost all our communities where sisters are serving the local people.

We added a mile stone to our history in Nigeria on August 12, 2023. The Province celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60 years) in Enugu State.
